You may have noticed recently that there are add links in the blog posts on our class website.

Edublogs recently started adding them as a way to pay for the server space. I didn’t notice them because when I am logged in with my Edublogs account they don’t show up.

I do not mind banner adds, but the linking directly in the posts is not something I like. I don’t have control over what exactly the advertisements link to and do not want anyone to think that I put them in there. I know that the content is safe for students to visit because Edublogs is for teachers and students.

I’m currently looking into options on what to do about this. I could pay a fee and have them all go away, but I’d also like a better website address that would be easier for students to get access. So if I’m going to be paying I think I might just have the website hosted somewhere else so I have more control over it.

I’ll let everyone know what ends up happening. Thanks for visiting our site!

Today in class we watched a video shot completely on a cell phone. It won awards. It’s embedded below in this post.

I thought the way the video was set up was great. It used pictures of words to tell a story. I think this would be a great way for us to share stories in reading class.

If your taking pictures over the break with a digital camera or a cell phone, take some of different words. We will put all the word pictures together on flickr and use them to make stories.

If you are not in our class and want to contribute your pictures, visit this wiki page for more information:
http://trailsidepd.wikispaces.com/Picture+Stories

Here is the video we watched and another one that uses the same type of storytelling. Enjoy, and go take some pictures of words!

We answered the following questions in our Math Journals:

1. What is easy about fractions? Why is it easy?

2. What is difficult about fractions? Why is it difficult?

We then entered them into a Google Form. It is the post below this one. If you would like to add your opinions feel free to do so in the text boxes.

After the students entered their journal entries, I copied and pasted them into Wordle.net.

Here are the resulting Wordles:

Quite a few students have asked for links to some of the software and online tools we use in class. I’m going to list some of my favorites that I use in class and at home. All of these programs are free.

Google Earth – “Google Earth lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings and even explore galaxies in the Sky. You can explore rich geographical content, save your toured places and share with others.”

Google Maps – A lot like Google Earth, but online instead of a download. There are not as many features.

Cooliris – This is a visual picture viewer that we use in class. You can search for images and video about a topic. It is a really visual way to experience the Internet. This is a browser-add on.

Skype – We are not able to use this at school, but it is a video conferencing tool. If you have a camera hooked up or built in to your computer you can audio and video conference with other people that have Skype installed. It is a great way to keep up with family and friends.

Google Docs – By signing up for a Google Account you can access Google Docs. It is a lot like Microsoft Office, but completely online so you can use it from any computer with Internet access. It has a word processor, spreadsheet application, interactive forms, and a presentation tool. You can also share documents with other people and they can edit them. Up to 10 people can be editing a document at one time. This is great for collaborative projects or documents that you want to be able to access on more than one computer.

UStream.tv – “Experience live video. In just minutes, you can broadcast and chat online with a global audience. Completely free, all it takes is a camera and Internet connection.” If you have a camera and microphone you can have your own video broadcast. I’ve seen this used for classroom presentations, professional development videos for teachers, and live video of different events. We have not used this in class yet, but it is a very interesting tool.

VoiceThread – “A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to leave comments in 5 ways – using voice (with a mic or phone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). Share a VoiceThread with friends, students, and colleagues for them to record comments too.” We will be using Voice Threads soon for a science picture dictionary. It is a great tool to share student work with the world. There are some examples from my previous classes on this blog.

These are a few of the interesting tools we’ve used in class or that I use personally. If you have any questions about any of the software or websites please feel free to contact me or leave a comment on this post.

Here are the presentations from Chapter 1.1 & 1.2 with audio narations. These will be great if you miss a day or just want to review what we went over. I don’t know how often I’ll be able to put these up like this, but I’ll try to keep up with it during the year. I’ll be sending a letter home sometime this week (and also posting here on our class website) showing how to download these presentations into iTunes and put them on to a video iPod.

Above each presentation is a link to the guided notes we used in class.

Boone Nolte is an architect employed by the firm Locati Architects in Bozeman, Montana.

What university did you attend? How long did it take? Why did you choose that university?

I attended Montana State University. I received my Masters Degree in Architecture in 5 years. I chose MSU because it had a great architecture program, labeled “Best in the West” and because I love the state of Montana. It is a great place for outdoor activities such as camping and fishing.

How do you make “work” fun?

One way I keep my work environment fun and exciting is by finding a topic that deals with my job (i.e. new “green” building materials) and learning about those topics through research on the Internet, books, or by visiting a new building that may have used those materials in their designs. The key for me is to break through the day to day routine of a job by learning new things all the time.

What do you like about your job?

I like my job because I am in the field twice a week meeting with clients, contractors, and other groups that are involved with the design and building of our projects. I get to work with many types of people and am involved with the project from the day it started to the day the client moves in.

What types of buildings have you designed?

I have designed high end residential projects. The homes we design are all one of a kind custom homes that fit the client’s needs and tastes.

What are your career goals?

My main career goal is to keep working hard at what I do. That way when the time is right I can open my own firm and branch out to different types of design.

Who are your favorite architects? What do you admire about their work?

My favorite architect is Richard Meier. The reason I like Richard Meier is because he developed his own style of architecture and was able to do projects he enjoyed. His work is unlike any other architects right down to the color of the buildings. He is also not afraid to put his design out into the public eye even though it is so different from other architects work.

What was your favorite studio project or architectural class in school? Why?

I enjoyed my thesis project the most. The reason I liked this project was because I was able to pick a topic (adaptive reuse) and design a building that would showcase that topic and my ideas best. It is always more enjoyable to work on something you are interested in rather then what your professor likes.

If I wanted to become an architect, what (as a 6th grader now) do you think I should do?

Becoming an architect is not a difficult thing to do if you work hard in school and are not afraid to try new things. I believe that new experiences are stepping stones that you follow through life. The path can be as fun and exciting as you want it to be, with each bend or turn becoming a learning experience.

Thank you Mr. Nolte for taking the time to answer our questions!

Jordan Robinson is a sports agent with GRV Sports Agency based out of Orlando, Florida. Recently he was kind enough to answer interview questions for us. Below are the questions and his answers.

Why did you become a sports agent?
Jordan Robinson – I became a sports agent because I am very passionate about sports and about helping others. I have always loved playing sports since I was a little kid and I even got a chance to play basketball at the collegiate level. Since I wasn’t good enough to play sports professionally, I knew I could use my sports knowledge and my drive to make others happy by becoming a sports agent.

What do you do in a typical day, week, or month?
JR – A typical day for me involves talking to all of my clients to make sure they have everything that they need and to make sure they are content with where they are at. Also, my partners and I will travel around to various colleges and ballparks and try to meet players and coaches and let people know that our agency is ready to help anyone who needs it.

How did you get started as an agent? What kind of training/school?
JR – Just like anyone who wants to start their own company, starting a sports agency takes a lot of time and hard work. In order to represent players in certain leagues, such as the National Football League, you need to have achieved certain requirements and take a lot of tests. I went to 4 years of college, 2 at Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois and 2 at Indiana University in Bloomington Indiana. I then went to 3 years of Law School at Barry University School of Law in Orlando Florida and passed the Florida Bar Exam in July 2007.

Who do you work with?
JR – A good friend of mine who I met in Law School and another buddy of ours started up our agency now known as GRV Sports Agency. The GRV stands for all three of our last names. Gropp, Robinson, and Vrska.

What do you feel is the most important part of your job?
JR – I feel the most important part of my job is helping others be as happy as they can be. My job all depends on the success and happiness of my clients. If a player of mine is not happy, then I’m not happy.

What is your favorite sports memory? What is your favorite part of your job?
JR – I have a few favorite sports memories. One would be that in a college basketball game I got a chance to play at then end of the game when time was running out and we were down by 2. I ended up getting the ball with 3 seconds left and I fired up a 3 pointer with a defender right in my face trying to block my shot. I made the basket as time expired and my team won the game. It was a great memory and an even better shot!

Also, I attended a summer camp in Eagle River, Wisconsin called Camp Ojibwa which was primarily a sports camp with very intense competition for 8 weeks. For the last week of camp everyone is divided up into 12 colleges and drafted like any professional sports draft. My last year as a camper I was drafted at the 7th pick of the 1st round which made me the captain of my team. We ended up winning the week long competition which is called Collegiate Week. I will never forget that day. People go to this camp for their entire lives and never get a chance to win, so that was a very exciting time for me.

My favorite part of my job is getting to meet so many interesting people and athletes.

Thank you for your time and good luck to everyone!

———————————-

Thank you Jordan for taking time to answer our questions. We will try and get an interview up once a week for the rest of the school year. Next week we will be interviewing an architect.

We used a website called VoiceThread to make our Science Picture Dictionaries (Williams’ Class – Mabee’s Class).

Now you can comment on VoiceThreads using your phone instead of a microphone. While viewing a slide, there is a phone icon near the microphone icon. You can click on it, put your phone number in, and they call you to leave a message on the slide. The only problem I see with this right now is that you have to have registered an account with VoiceThread to use this feature. That is actually a good thing too, because it tracks who leaves the comments.

Check out this VoiceThread for an example on how to leave a voice comment using your phone:
Still, what does that matter? I want to write, but more than that, I want to bring out all kinds of things that lie buried deep in my heart.”

Yes, there is no doubt that paper is patient and as I don’t intend to show this cardboard-covered notebook, bearing the proud name of “diary,” to anyone, unless I find a real friend, boy or girl, probably nobody cares.”

Where are these quotes from? Saturday, the 2oth of June, 1942 – The Diary of Anne Frank.

The book is now considered one of the key texts of the twentieth century. As of 2004, more than 25 million copies of the book had been sold; the book had also been translated into more than 50 languages.

A few things on my mind for this semester:

1. YouTube – It is still blocked by our district. If you are at school most of the video’s below will not play. I am working on getting this changed, but if it does get changed it will take some time. (You can view most of the video’s at school in the Mr. Williams’ class folder on your desktop)

2. Homework Club – Homework Club will be changing. I am writing up a letter to send home to parents. I will be doing more intensive tutoring in Math. Everyone is invited (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 2:45 – 3:45) but you may be required to come based on your last math benchmark score. A passing grade was a 60%. If you scored below a 60% I would like you to come in at least once a week. If you scored under a 30% you need to come in at least twice a week. You will receive a letter with your score on it on Friday with your Progress Report.

3. Our Class Movie – We are still working on our class movie, but we are not able to spend as much time on it as we need to get it finished. I hope we can finish it within a month, watch it in class, and get it burned to some DVD’s that you can check out to share with your parents and family members.

4. Imbee.com – “55% of all online youths age 12 – 17 use social networking websites (myspace.com, etc.). 91% of all social networking teens say they use the sites to stay in touch with friends they see frequently, while 82% use the sites to stay in touch with friends they rarely see in person.” I know that a lot of you have MySpace accounts (and I know that it is against their user policy for anyone under 14 to be a member). I also hope that your parents know this. I want to make sure that you have the skills to use these Social Networking websites safely. “Imbee is the first free, secure social networking and blogging destination specifically designed for kids from ages 8 to 14. Imbee was created to provide a secure, dynamic environment where children can safely explore online social networking.” Imbee has a lot of the same features like blogs, messaging, and photo sharing. I am thinking about setting this up for at least my homeroom class just to teach more about Internet safety and so that students can work together on projects in a safe environment. I have set up a teacher account and will be sending permission letters home within the next couple of weeks. I will talk more with the other classes about Imbee if I think it is useful.

5. Meaner – Quite a few of the students from my homeroom class said that I should be meaner in the evaluations they filled out before winter break. I’ll think about this one.

6. Blog – I will try to put up more content from our class discussions here on the blog. Also, I really don’t like the color scheme of the blog, but I can’t figure out how to change it (yet).

[1] Squaring numbers in the 50′s:
Example 56 x 56:
Step 1: You start out with 25 and add the ones digit to it.
25 + 6 = 31
Step 2: Square the ones digit. 6 x 6 =36 Tack this onto the end of the answer from step 1.
Answer: 56 x 56 = 3,136

Now, if the number from step 2 is less than 10, you have to put a zero in front of it.
So, if it is 53 x 53:
Step 1: 25 + 3 = 28
Step 2: 3 x 3 = 09 (note that since 9 is smaller than 10 we have tu put a zero in front of it)
Answer: 53 x 53 = 2,809

[2] Squaring numbers that end in 5:
Example 65 x 65:
Step 1: Take the tens digit and multiply it by the number one greater than it. 6 x 7 = 42
Step 2: Tack 25 onto the end of the number from Step 1.

[3] Multiplying two numbers that end in five that are ten apart:
Example 65 x 75
Step 1: Take the smaller tens digits (6) and multiply it by one more than the larger tens digit (7+1 = 8). 6 x 8 = 48
Example 65 x 85
Step 1: Multiply the smaller tens digit (6) by one greater than the larger tens digit (8 + 1 = 9) and then add 1 to that product. 6 x 9 = 54. 54 +1 = 55
Step 2: Tack 25 on to the end of the number from Step 1.
When you multiply two numbers in the 90′s together, in parenthesis next to each number put how far that number is away from 100. Since 92 is 8 away from 100 and 94 is 6 away from 100, the problem 92 x 94 would look like this: 92( 8 ) x 94(6)
Example: 93(7) x 96(4)
Step 1: Add up the numbers in parenthesis 7 + 4 = 11 and subtract that number from 100. 100 – 11 = 89
Step 2: Multiply the two numbers in parenthesis together and tack that on to the number from Step 1. 7 x 4 = 28

[6] Squaring numbers in the 40′s:
Step 1: You start out with 15 and add the ones digit to it. 15 + 3 = 18
Step 2: You figure out how much the number you are squaring is less than 50 and square that number. 43 is 7 less than 50. 7 x 7 is 49. Tack that number onto the end of the number from step 1.

Using geoGreeting! you can use the earth to spell messages. It uses buildings from around the world in the shape of letters. It puts a placemark on the map to show you where the “letter” came from. It even makes a webpage that you can link to or send out in email messages so anyone can view what you’ve made.

Here is the link for the picture below:

Want to practice your spelling words for next week?

Unexpected spellings
doubt, fascinate, science, scenic, autumn, column, guilty,
league, guardian, disguise, subtle, debt, reminiscent,
descent, condemn, solemn, guidance, vague, fatigue, intrigue

This week there will not be any bonus words. You can get your three extra points by making a geoGreetings of at least three words. Email it to me, or put the link in a Word File in the class folder (name the file as your name). We’ll talk about this more before computer lab on Thursday.

The Amazon Indians are using GPS devices and Google Earth to help preserve the rain forest. This article shows the incredible things that can be done with free software and how it can effect the world. Also, the Indians are able to create documents and reference material based on the interviews they are doing for the place names that they are mapping. What started as a small project is turning into a multi-age effort to preserve their area and heritage.

http://news.mongabay.com/2006/1114-google_earth-act.html

“Deep in the most remote jungles of South America, Amazon Indians are using Google Earth, Global Positioning System (GPS) mapping, and other technologies to protect their fast-dwindling home. Tribes in Suriname, Brazil, and Colombia are combining their traditional knowledge of the rainforest with Western technology to conserve forests and maintain ties to their history and cultural traditions, which include profound knowledge of the forest ecosystem and medicinal plants. Helping them is the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT), a nonprofit organization working with indigenous people to conserve biodiversity, health, and culture in South American rainforests.”

All I can say is wow! I talked in class with a couple of you about how the newest version of Google Earth had 3-D capabilities. The program to draw 3-D objects is called SketchUp. Today I really started looking at it. It seems like you could draw just about any building or object, and make whatever you are drawing an exact size easily. I can’t believe that this software is free.

There are also some great SketchUp Tutorial videos.

I’m going to see if we can get Google Earth and SketchUp installed on the laptops and really start using it during homework club. Maybe we could make all of Sine Elementary in SketchUp and share it on the Google Earth Community. I need to go buy some tape measures.

They even have weekly SketchUp Challenges. Go there and check out some pictures of what can be created.

I hope everyone is having a good break. See you on Monday. I think from the things I’ve learned this week we’ll have some changes in class.

Today in class I used Google Earth to show where World War II battles were fought. The students found it very interesting and I told them I would post a blog about the software.

Google Earth:
The idea is simple. It’s a globe that sits inside your PC. You point and zoom to anyplace on the planet that you want to explore. Satellite images and local facts zoom into view. Tap into Google search to show local points of interest and facts. Zoom to a specific address to check out an apartment or hotel. View driving directions and even fly along your route. We invite you to try it now. (From the Google Earth Website)

Google Earth is free and can be downloaded at: http://earth.google.com/
- To use Google Earth you will need a high-speed Internet connection (Cable or DSL).

You can download “Placemarks” that show specific sites. You can also create your own placemarks and share them with the Google Earth Community.

Download the WWII battles .kml here

Click on the “Open this Placemark” link under the title. It will open Google Earth. You can save the .kml file when you close Google Earth.

The great thing about this file is that it is broken into categories. Viewing it all at once is overwhelming. You can set it to only view battles in specific countries, or to only view things like Concentration Camps, Nazi & Japanese war crimes, etc. It also has links to WikiPedia articles about each placemark. **Note: WikiPedia can be edited by anyone. Be sure to double check the information you find on it if you are using it for your projects.

Google Earth is a great resource for History and Geography because it is so visual. It is also very fun. The students really enjoy using it on the Smart Board.

I have been updating the Links and added a Homework section to the top of this blog.

The Links section is a list of good websites for review of content. It has educational (and very fun) games, video tutorials, etc.

The Homework section will (hopefully) be updated on nearly a daily basis with the assignments from that day.

These sections can be accessed by clicking on the links above the picture on the top of the page.

This week a SmartBoard was installed in our classroom. This incredible piece of technology turns our whiteboard into a touch-screen computer. We can access any of the software on the computer in front of the classroom, write & draw on it to take notes, and save everything for later review. It is very interactive, and the students in my class are already enjoying it and picking up on how it works at an improbable speed. I am very excited about the possibilities this technology brings. Eight SmartBoards have been installed throughout the school.

This blog was set up so that anyone could comment on posts and they would be available immediately.

Due to the actions of one person that is no longer available. Comments must now be approved by me before they are seen by everyone. This could mean it would take more time to get an answer to a question.

I have put up this website to be helpful. If you want to post comments that are inappropriate and not helpful, I would rather you don’t use this website.

Commenting is a way to communicate with me about the posts that are up, and questions you have about information we have covered in class. Now one person has runied that for everyone by using language that shows an inability to communicate like a responsible, educated person.

Parents, please monitor your childrens’ Internet usage.

The following websites may help:

Today (in my Homeroom class) we used United Streaming Video to research for our Science and Social Studies projects.

Some of the students were asking about inserting video from United Streaming into Power Point presentations. We will all be learning about this during our next computer lab time. If students would like to find out before then, there is a tutorial below.

Inserting Video Tutorial -> United Streaming in PowerPoint

Through this account they can log-in to United Streaming to watch & download videos. If your student has not yet set up an account and would like to, they need a pass-code from me or one of the other 6th grade teachers. Please email me for this information and instructions on setting up the account. jwilliams {at} gesd40. org
